"We would like to give you an update on the situation with the burst killer setting on the RS41 radiosonde. I have also attached an updated statement, if you want to put it up on the website.

After receiving feedback from multiple sources on the need for an extended transmission time, Vaisala’s R&D re-evaluated the use cases related to the default burst killer functionality.

We decided to extend the RS41 transmission time to 510 minutes (8.5 hours) to allow radiosonde hunters enough time to find sondes. Depending on the ascent time, this will extend the total transmitting to roughly 10.5 hours, which is longer than with the RS92.

We fully support the valuable actions by radiosonde hunters to retrieve radiosondes from the environment and hope that this change will allow for more radiosondes to be retrieved from the terrain.

Like we have stated previously, we cannot disable the burst killer totally. The default value of 8.5 hours is selected based on the fact that synoptic soundings are typically conducted at 12 hour intervals simultaneously around the globe. With 10.5 hours of total transmitting time, the majority of radiosonde users can settle with default killer setting and single frequency, even taking into account preparation time. If the customers make consecutive soundings in short, e.g. 2…6 hour intervals, or perform adaptive soundings immediately after pre-scheduled soundings, they will need to use multiple sounding frequencies or the operators need to adjust the killer setting for a shorter period of time.

It is important that majority of customers can settle with default killer setting since all the stations cannot use multiple frequencies, or the operators cannot set the killer individually for various reasons. In many countries the use the of the 400.15-406 MHz band is strictly controlled. For example in Germany each station has only two allocated frequencies available, and in Japan and Australia the frequency allocation is only half of the 400.15-406Mhz band. We have also received actual feedback that a customer still receives data from the previously launched radiosonde when conducting the next launch after a few hours.

Customers are able to extend the killer settings up to the whole battery life time, so they may do this, if it is possible in their region. We will communicate about this feature to our customers as well.

However, I would like to point out that although we have made the decision to change the settings, and the new batches of RS41 radiosondes will include the updated time parameter, the customer may have a batch of older radiosondes with old parameters. Due to this, the change in operations will not take place immediately.

We support our customers in their efforts to operate in a sustainable way, and strive to improve our own operations continuously. We have, for example, improved considerably the environmental footprint of the RS41 compared to the RS92. We are always looking for environmentally friendly solutions that also fulfill the strict demands set for radiosonde reliability and accuracy. Radiosondes must function in a challenging application environment, for example in -90 ⁰C temperatures. When evaluating threats versus benefits to the society, it is good to acknowledge that radiosondes contribute greatly to weather forecasting, climatology and atmospheric research, and through them to the well-being and safety of us all.

I sincerely hope that you find our approach satisfactory from radiosonde hunting perspective, as it should keep your recovery percentage at the current level in your region, or even raise it.

To w przyszłym roku nasi Koledzy na Pomorzu też sobie zapolują na RS41 - bez podejmowania zakulisowych zabiegów w SPA Łeba.
A do mnie może jakaś z Brześcia zawita...
8,5 godziny czasu jaki dostanie łowca od lądowania jest moim zdaniem w zupełności wystarczające.
W większości przypadków wystarczyła by 1 godzina - są ekipy, które 3 minuty po przyziemieniu sondy są po akcji Laughing

Mogliby jeszcze w Vaisali popracować nad koordynacją częstotliwości...
